Sustained stress elevates cortisol — the primary stress hormone — which directly disrupts the prefrontal cortex: the part of the brain responsible for reasoning, planning, empathy and complex decision-making. Under elevated cortisol, the brain defaults to survival-mode processing: reactive, narrow, threat-focused.
